WHEN THE MAC IS OFF

I’m a mum of one (who is growing far too fast) and a lively Parson’s Jack Russell Terrier.

In my spare time I love the great outdoors, camping, festivals and live music. I love to social dance too, especially West Coast Swing (although this is sadly on hold at the moment).

As an avid lover of interiors, my perfect Sunday would be spent browsing car boots looking for retro finds.

My back story

My humble beginnings taught me all about the value of hard work. After graduating from Gloucestershire University with a degree in Multimedia and Computing I went straight into the corporate world working in marketing and websites for Zurich Financial Services. I loved the hustle and bustle of being part of a team and the collaboration that went with it. Bursting with ideas, my voice was small and my ideas huge, and I knew there had to be more out there…

So in 2003 I took the plunge and set up my branding and web design business.

I networked hard and won some really great work and long-standing clients. I built up a team and nice offices, but the 2008/2009 recession hit plus the stress of running an agency took its toll. The turning point came when my daughter was born and I had to simplify everything. Even then it was a juggle, but hard work is something I thrive on and so I pushed through.

I was head down for many years, consumed by project work – I didn’t come up for air!

Without realising it, I had fallen into the trap of being too reliant on one sole business. Whilst this provided financial cushioning, it also brought a lot of stress. Eggs, basket, you get the picture…

So I focussed on going back to my roots and working with service businesses and personal brands who needed an outsourced marketing department so they could focus on running their business.

Then 2020 happened. The year of change for everyone!

I caught my breath. I had time to stop and think and consider if my business model was right.  I invested in some long overdue personal development and professional support. These days I do a blend of project work, brand & website mentoring and I have created some online courses and digital products to ensure multiple income streams. And because I am no longer trading time for money, I am able to help more businesses make their website work harder for them. My FREE Facebook community is growing (come and join us)!

I want to say that running a business is easy but the reality is that it does require a lot of hard work and determination.

I won’t deny there have been times where I have thought of just getting a job. But working for someone else, compromising family time and essentially swapping one set of problems for another isn’t an option. It is about figuring out the right balance and getting back that freedom.

I’ve made tons of mistakes over the years. But it isn’t about the mistake, it is what you do with it that matters.

Taking everything I have learned, survived and invested in now allows me to help more businesses because I have changed my business model to one that works well around my life and daughter whilst still providing lots of time and energy to help my clients.
